What is a tribal rug?

A tribal or nomadic rug is one produced in a more primitive method and intended for use by the weaver and family rather than a commercial venture.

Many of these rugs are traded but usually only after being used for many years by the nomadic group first. They often have more character than a rug that has been commissioned and tend to be more irregular in shape and aesthetic. The designs are a reflection of nomadic life and depict tribal histories and traditions incorporating many symbols and motifs.

Most nomadic carpets or rugs are produced on a non static loom made in the yurt and due to size constraints don't normally exceed 240cm wide, the the standard size of the loom.

Tribal rugs get the name assigned by the Nomadic group that has made them, for example a Qashqai rug has been woven by the Qashqai tribe of south western Iran. Rugs have been produced in this fashion for thousands of years and can be traced back to 5th century BC. The rug holds a practical aspect alongside one of a decorative item and used in the everyday life of the nomads as tent underlay, saddlebags, salt bags and blankets.
